We are looking at a little bit like a story, it feels very good. This is a word. And this story, daughter-in-law, grandmother, kinship — this is the first creation.

When the boy becomes young, grows up, then the parents, relatives, maternal uncle, paternal uncle, elder sister, younger sister think — "Now this son should get married; now is a good time to search for a daughter-in-law." Then they choose a "Suya Budha" or "Agua" (leader) to start the work. This Suya or Agua is the real chief of the Kharia marriage.

Suya or Agua, along with the boy's relatives, goes to the girl's house from somewhere in search of a bride. Suya inquires about the girl. He goes, or doesn't go; that village, or not that village; he asks about their relatives, so that he can find a suitable girl for the groom. About the boy, about the boy's family, how far the distance is — all this is told. Golang-Arkhi fly or don't fly, kodi (straw) or umbodiz (water) — through all these, the girl's side is asked day by day whether they agree.

After checking everything, they think about the truth — that the girl's parents should be invited — "You people come."

Then from the boy's side — about the girl's family, where the girl is from, whether she is beautiful or not, good-natured or not, how she is at work, educated or not — everything is told. Especially it is told that the girl's family has invited them.

When the boy's side, family, parents, and relatives agree, then the day is fixed to go see the girl. The first visit to see the girl is called "Garha Dipa", "Dhaja Na" or "Sutrom Tolna". These names may vary according to village and kinship; but they all have the same meaning.

The boy, accompanied by the “Suya,” one of his companions, his elder or younger sister, their close relatives, and five people from the village, goes to the girl’s home along with the family group. In earlier times, when the journey had to be made on foot, by bicycle, or by bus, they would leave in the morning and generally reach the girl’s home by evening. Since the “Suya” accompanied them, their feet were formally washed according to tradition, after which they were invited to sit. Water was then served, followed by customary conversation, such as asking how they had travelled and whether they had faced any difficulty on the way.

The girl’s father calls five people from the village and informs them that some guests have arrived at his home. He asks them to come and find out who the visitors are, where they have come from, and for what purpose. The relatives and members of the village community then arrive, meet the visitors, and sit together with them.

The knowledgeable and experienced members of the girl’s family lead this inquiry. The person who leads the process is called the “Kartaha.” Once everyone has gathered, the Kartaha comes forward and initiates a formal question-and-answer session between the two sides. This traditional exchange of questions and answers is known in Kharia society as “Jung Jung Dai.”

For the purpose of explaining the conversation, the boy is named “Jeevan,” belonging to the “Dungdung” clan and the Bhuiyar place “Bongloya,” while the girl is named “Jyoti,” belonging to the “Bilang” clan and the Bhuiyar place “Murgu.” The boy’s father and mother will be respectfully referred to as Raja “Dungdung” and Rani “Shanti,” respectively. Similarly, the girl’s father and mother will be referred to as Raja “Bilang” and Rani “Dayamani.”

First, the two sides exchange formal introductions. The Kartaha from the girl’s side then begins the proceedings by asking the visiting relatives: “Who are you? Which family or lineage do you belong to? Where have you come from, and for what purpose have you come here?”

The person from the boy’s family who answers these questions is called the “Suya” or “Suya Budha.” For consistency with the commonly used term, we will refer to him here as “Suya Budha.” When the Kartaha from the girl’s side asks the questions, Suya Budha stands and explains: “We are relatives of Raja Dungdung. We live in Thethai Tangar and have come from there. The ancestral land or village of Raja Dungdung is Kinjerkela. From there, our family settled in Jaroikela and later moved to Tiloeimal. Since adequate educational facilities were not available for the prince in Tiloeimal, we came to Thethai Tangar and established our home here. We will explain why we have come here after the formal introduction between the two sides.”

Similarly, the Kartaha explains the clan and lineage of the girl’s father, Raja “Bilang,” and his wife, Rani “Dayamani.” He states that Raja Bilang formerly lived in “Kadopani.” From there, the family moved to “Kahupani,” where their daughter “Jyoti” was born. They later moved to their present settlement at “Khanjaloia.” This constitutes their lineage and clan identity.

The Kartaha from the girl’s side then asks again: “Are you people not thieves, miscreants, or persons with any wrong intentions?”

Suya Budha stands again and replies that they are neither thieves nor people with ill intentions. They are honest and straightforward people. Their family travelled through Kinjerkela, Jaroikela, Tiloeimal, and Simdega before finally settling in Thethai Tangar.

The Kartaha from the girl’s side then asks again: “There must be some purpose behind your visit. Why have you come, and what is the reason for your visit? We would like to know.”

At this point, Suya Budha from the boy’s side stands up and narrates a story. This story is regarded as the central narrative of “Yo’yo Dai” or “Jung Jung Dai.” It forms one of the foundations, or the first stage, of the marriage process in Kharia society. The story may be narrated somewhat differently in different places, but its basic structure remains the same. The story presented here is as follows.

After arriving at Thethai Tangar, Raja “Dungdung” approached the Kharia king, “Buddhiman,” with a request and prayer for permission to settle there. King Buddhiman then instructed him to clear the forest, build his home, and settle there.

Following the order of Kharia King Buddhiman, Raja Dungdung cleared the forest, built his home at Thethai Tangar, and settled there with his family.

After Suya Budha finishes narrating the story, both sides discuss the matter among themselves. According to customary practice, if any shortcoming or mistake is identified, an appropriate compensation or penalty may be determined. If everything is found to be satisfactory, the main character of the story—the hawk—is lovingly brought down from the roof with the help of a wooden stick and taken inside the house.

The “Yo’yo Dai” or “Jung Jung Dai” ceremony has not yet come to an end. It is still the first day, and it is nearly nine o’clock at night. The girl’s family has arranged food for everyone, so all the guests are invited to sit down for dinner. After the meal, everyone retires to the designated place to rest for the night.

The symbolic characters in this story—the hawk, the quail, and the hunters—have particular meanings. The hawk represents the boy for whom a bride is being sought. The quail represents the girl who may become the prospective bride. The hunters symbolize the people who conduct the search and bring information or news.

After everything is settled and breakfast is over, Suya Budha requests the Kartaha from the girl’s side: “Now please show us the quail.” The Kartaha then brings the girl, “Jyoti,” who has already been prepared for the occasion, out of the house with a beautiful traditional song or hymn and asks her to stand in the centre.

After the girl is brought outside, the girl’s family introduces her to the boy’s side, saying: “This is your beloved Khawasin, ‘Jyoti,’ whom you have come to see for Jeevan.” The girl is thus formally presented. The boy’s family then offers her a customary marriage-related gift and ties a thread around her hand.

“Yo’yo Dai” or “Jung Jung Dai” is not the final stage of marriage; rather, it is the first stage of the marriage process. Whether the boy and the girl like and accept each other is communicated to both families after one or two days through the Kartaha and Suya Budha.

In some places, the families give a direct “yes” or “no.” However, in many places, the girl’s family gives its decision only after a “Chhota Mehmani,” meaning a visit to the boy’s home to see his family, household, and living arrangements.
